50th Anniversary of Barbie™ 1oz Silver Proof Coin

Posted on 17:20 by Unknown
Do you know that Barbie doll or Barbara Millicent Roberts, celebrates her 50th anniversary this year, and The Perth Mint released a 50th Anniversary of Barbie™ 1oz Silver Proof Coin to mark the occasion. The coin’s reverse depicts classic images of Barbie™ on a background featuring coloured highlights in pink. The design also incorporates the Barbie™ 50th anniversary logo and The Perth Mint's 'P' mint mark. The Perth Mint is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Barbie™, one of the hottest selling toys and collectables in the world, with an exclusive commemorative coin aimed at a wide range of fans – from those who enjoy memories of the doll they played with as a child, to the serious collector fascinated by her fashion, accessories and entourage of friends.

Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by the American toy-company Mattel, Inc. and launched in March 1959. American businesswoman Ruth Handler (1916-2002) is credited with the creation of the doll using a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration. Mattel estimates that there are well over 100,000 avid Barbie collectors. Ninety percent are women, at an average age of 40, purchasing more than twenty Barbie dolls each year. Forty-five percent of them spend upwards of $1000 a year.

Check out 50 years of Barbie® history and highlights.

Vintage Barbie dolls from the early years are the most valuable at auction, and while the original Barbie was sold for $3.00 in 1959, a mint boxed Barbie from 1959 sold for $3552.50 on eBay in October 2004. On September 26, 2006, a Barbie doll set a world record at auction of £9,000 sterling (US $17,000) at Christie's in London. The doll was a Barbie in Midnight Red from 1965 and was part of a private collection of 4,000 Barbie dolls being sold by two Dutch women, Ietje Raebel and her daughter Marina.

Perth Mint 50th Anniversary of Barbie™ coin struck with 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality. Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the coin portrays the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2009 year-date on the obverse. Each coin is housed in a pink presentation case featuring the Barbie™ anniversary logo on the lid, and an illustrated shipper. Only 20,000 of the coin mintage for worldwide collector accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

I really don't know that Barbie is older then me. Do any of you a Barbie doll collector? This coin might be an interest to all of you out there.
