Romania Treasure: Koson Coin turned in by local

I found this news about Romania Koson coin that I think worth mentioning in my blog. The koson is a controversial currency as it includes equal influences from Greeks and Romans, which makes exact provenance hard to determine. One koson weighs little over 8g, which is higher than the weight of the gold coins used by the Romans. The three toga-dressed people on one face of the coin could be Roman citizens of Republican Rome and the vulture keeping a wreath in its claws could be the symbol of a barbarian monarch.

Although the first koson were found near Orastie, the coins are made of a gold ally, but Dacians, the forerunners of today’s Romanians who inhabited the area, never minted gold coins. Their coins and jewelries were manufactured of silver. This is why the most plausible theory about the coins’ provenance is that they were minted under some Dacian king named Koson, somewhere after the collapse of the kingdom of legendary Dacian king Burebista and his centralised state. Historians argue that the koson were scattered in the same area because Dacian King Decebal did so with his treasury in the face of Roman danger in 106.

on 19 September 2009, a sizeable treasure of 142 ancient Romanian coins called koson weighing more then 1.2 kg, valued on the black market at nearly 85,000 euros, has been turned in to the Police by a local of Mt. Orastie, western part of the country, who will be recompensed according to the legislation in force. The 142 koson, of high value to the national heritage of Romania, individually weighing between 8.20 and 8.80 g and dating back to the second half of the 1st century B.Ch., were presented at a news conference on Thursday at the Alba Iulia National Union Museum.

Deputy Prosecutor General with the Alba Iulia Court of Appeal Augustin Lazar said the treasure was turned in by a local of the western city of Hunedoara, who said he kept it as a good faith curator. Preliminary expert conclusions say the coins are authentic and will be turned over to Romania’s National Museum of History in Bucharest.

Another one of the world famous war coin series is the Battle of Cannae. The Battle of Cannae was a major battle of the Second Punic War, taking place on August 2, 216 BC near the town of Cannae in Apulia in southeast Italy. The army of Carthage under Hannibal decisively defeated a numerically superior army of the Roman Republic under command of the consuls Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro. This is the second release in five coin series. This coin is the second coin in this series and already sold out a few month back.

The Battle of Cannae is regarded as one of the greatest tactical feats in military history and, in terms of the numbers killed, the greatest defeat of Rome. Having recovered from their previous losses at Trebia (218 BC) and Trasimene (217 BC), the Romans decided to engage Hannibal at Cannae, with roughly 87,000 Roman and Allied troops. The Romans massed their heavy infantry in a deeper formation than usual while Hannibal utilized the double-envelopment tactic. This was so successful that the Roman army was destroyed as a fighting force. Following the Battle of Cannae, Capua and several other Italian city-states defected from the Roman Republic.

The Second Punic War, which lasted between 218 and 201 BC, saw the Carthaginians under Hannibal inflict a series of crushing defeats on the Roman legions culminating at Cannae. The fourth coin of the world famous war coin series is The Battle of Balaklava. The Battle of Balaclava, fought on 25 October 1854 during the Crimean War, was part of the Anglo-French-Turkish campaign to capture the port and fortress of Sevastopol, Russia's principal naval base on the Black Sea. The engagement followed the earlier Allied victory in September at the Battle of the Alma, where the Russian General Menshikov had positioned his army in an attempt to stop the Allies progressing south towards their strategic goal. Alma was the first major encounter fought in the Crimea since the Allied landings at Kalamita Bay on 14 September, and was a clear battlefield success; but a tardy pursuit by the Allies failed to gain a decisive victory, allowing the Russians to regroup, recover, and prepare their defences.

The Allies decided against an immediate assault on Sevastopol and instead prepared for a protracted siege. The British, under the command of Lord Raglan, and the French, under Canrobert, positioned their troops to the south of the port on the Chersonese peninsula: the French army occupied Kamiesh on the west coast whilst the British moved to the southern port of Balaklava. However, this position committed the British to the defence of the right flank of the Allied siege operations, for which Raglan had insufficient troops. Taking advantage of this exposure, the Russian General Liprandi, with some 25,000 men, prepared to attack the defences in and around Balaclava, hoping to disrupt the supply chain between the British base and their siege lines.

The battle began with a Russian artillery and infantry attack on the Ottoman Turkish redoubts that formed Balaclava's first line of defence. The Turks initially resisted the Russian assaults, but lacking support they were eventually forced to retreat. When the redoubts fell, the Russian cavalry moved to engage the second defensive line held by the Turks and the Scottish 93rd Highland Regiment in what came to be known as the 'Thin Red Line'. The only important thing I don't see in FC Mint website is the mintage quantity of the coin. To Micheal Jackson fan who want to buy this coin, mintage will not be an issue. The Battle of Thermopylae was fought in a narrow pass in northern Greece between the invading Persian Empire under King Xerxes and a vastly outnumbered alliance of Greek city-states commanded by King Leonidas of Sparta. It took place over three days during the second Persian invasion of Greece. It took place simultaneously with the naval battle at Artemisium, in August or September 480 BC, at the pass of Thermopylae ('The Hot Gates'). This coin already sold out a few month back.

The Persian army, alleged by the ancient sources to have numbered in the millions, arrived at the pass in late August or early September. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held up the Persians for seven days in total (including three of battle), before the rear-guard was annihilated in one of history's most famous last stands. During two full days of battle, the small force led by King Leonidas I of Sparta blocked the only road by which the massive Persian army could pass. After the second day of battle, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a small path that led behind the Greek lines. Aware that they were being outflanked, Leonidas dismissed the bulk of the Greek army, and remained to guard the rear with 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, 400 Thebans and perhaps a few hundred others, the vast majority of whom were killed. The courageous last stand by Leonidas inspired the united Greeks to ultimate victory in ensuing battles, thereby securing the rise of classical Greece, with its innovative ideas on politics, philosophy and the arts.

First of all I want to wish Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri to all my Muslim reader around the globe. Today I will be talking about Green envelope or "sampul duit raya" in Malay language. A green envelope (Malay: sampul hijau or sampul duit raya) is the Malay adaptation of the Chinese red envelope or ang pow, where Malay Muslims in Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore hand out money in green envelopes to their guests who visit their homes during Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

The reason behind the green colour is simply its association with the Islamic paradise. The idea of handing out green envelopes is based on the Islamic concept of zakat, where every Muslim is required to provide at least 2.5% mainly to the needy. However, providing green envelopes to others in Malay homes during Aidilfitri today is not only given to the poor guests, but also to the middle class and to the upper class. The amount of money depends on how much the host can afford to give their guests. The envelope nowadays come with different sizes and color (not just green color).

In Malaysia, Green envelope are given to any kids below the age of 12 years old that meet and greet Selamat Hari Raya to that particular person. I am remembering 20 years back, people would normally give at least one ringgit in the green packet. Nowadays, most green packet come with at least five ringgit. Some parents also give their Green packet to their children for a full month of fasting to encourage them doing so.

The Perth Mint had been issuing some Sports car coins series to celebrates legendary sports car in 2009. Most of the coins already sold out because of the low mintage of the coin. One of the legendary sports car coin that been released is Datsun 240Z. The Nissan S30 (sold in Japan as the Nissan Fairlady Z and in other markets as the Datsun 240Z and later as the 260Z and 280Z) was the first generation of Z sporty 2+2 coupes produced by Nissan Motors, Ltd. of Japan from 1969 to 1978. This is the only coin in its series by Perth Mint that has not out and sold at Ringgit Malaysia 241.69.

It was designed by a team led by Mr. Yoshihiko Matsuo, the head of Nissan's Sports Car Styling Studio. HLS30 was the designation of the left-hand drive model and HS30 for the right-hand drive model. Production began in 1969. The 1970 240Z was introduced to the American market by Yutaka Katayama, president of Nissan Motors USA operations, widely known as Mr. K. The early 1970 model 240Z had a chrome "240" badge on the B-pillar quarter panel. Two vents were included in the rear hatch below the glass molding. In mid-1971 the B-pillar side badges were restyled with the letter Z in white, and the vents were eliminated from the hatch.

One of the legendary sports car coin that been released is Mercedes-Benz 300SL. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was introduced in 1954 as a two-seat, closed sports car with distinctive gull-wing doors. Later it was offered as an open roadster. The 300SL was best known for both its distinctive gull wing doors and being the first-ever gasoline-powered car equipped with fuel injection directly into the combustion chamber. The gull wing version was available from March 1955 to 1957. Production of the roadster ended in 1963 with the introduction of the 230SL. The road model was suggested by Max Hoffman. Sport car coin-Jaguar E-Type

The Perth Mint had been issuing some Sports car coins series to celebrates legendary sports car in 2009. Most of the coins already sold out because of the low mintage of the coin. One of the legendary sports car coin that been released is The Jaguar E-Type. The Jaguar E-Type (UK) or XK-E (US) was a British automobile manufactured by Jaguar between 1961 and 1974. In March 2008, the Jaguar E-Type ranked first in Daily Telegraph list of the "100 most beautiful cars" of all time. In 2004, Sports Car International magazine placed the E-Type at number one on their list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s. This coin already sold out and sold at Ringgit Malaysia 241.69.

The Series 1 was introduced, initially for export only, in March 1961. The domestic market launch came four months later in July 1961. The cars at this time used the triple SU carburetted 3.8 litre 6-cylinder Jaguar XK6 engine from the XK150S. The first 500 cars built had flat floors and external hood (bonnet) latches. These cars are rare and more valuable. After that, the floors were dished to provide more leg room and the twin hood latches moved to inside the car. The 3.8 litre engine was increased to 4.2 litres in October 1964. Its combination of good looks, high performance, and competitive pricing resulted in a great success for Jaguar, with more than 70,000 E-Types being sold over its lifespan, and became an icon of 1960s motoring.
