World Famous War-The Battle of Gettysburg

Posted on 15:48 by Unknown
Perth Mint has been releasing World Famous War Coin series focussing on five notable engagements that changed the course of history, The Perth Mint’s Famous Battles Series portrays battlefield scenes spanning more than two millennia. The final release for the world famous war coin series by Perth Mint is Battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg (July 1–3, 1863), fought in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, as part of the Gettysburg Campaign, was the battle with the largest number of casualties in the American Civil War and is often described as the war's turning point.

Union Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, ending Lee's invasion of the North. Over three days, Union forces under the command of General George Meade repulsed the Confederate army led by General Robert E Lee, turning the course of the war in favour of the North. Four and a half months later, President Abraham Lincoln delivered one of the greatest addresses in American history on the Gettysburg field where more than 7,600 troops had died.
